Marcel was motivated to take control of his health and fitness by his nine-year-old son.

The 37-year-old was smoking a cigarette when he son bluntly asked him 'Daddy, you don't want to die, do you?'.

This was the watershed moment Marcel decided to make a huge change to his life and regain his fitness.

He has gone from being the dad out of breath playing football with his boy, to the lean, fit and muscular father he wanted to be after just 12 weeks of working with his Ultimate Performance personal trainer.

Marcel is now a man transformed – he lost 12kg, halved his body fat and got in the best shape of his life in just three months.

"Together with my trainer Sander, I reached my weight and body fat goal in just 12 weeks. I went from 87kg to 75kg, and my body fat dropped from 30% to 15%.

What were your motivations to start?
 

After a few years of training twice a week at a regular gym, I started realising that I wouldn’t be able to achieve the goals I really wanted. 

After an orientating talk with Michael 12 weeks ago, I signed up and decided to get more my focused and start realising my physique goals.

My motivation was reinforced by a statement made by my nine-year-old son. 

When I was smoking a cigarette he said: "Daddy you don’t want to die, do you?” 

I became aware that I had to set my priorities by being more healthy, especially because I wasn’t always able to play with him or couldn’t go for some football. It was time for a change!
 

How were you feeling physically and mentally before starting with UP?
 

Before I started, I thought I was physically and mentally strong. Because at work I was mostly in meetings and in the car. 

Lunches and dinners were delicious, and I was not aware of what I could order that was best for my health because everything looked tasty. 

In terms of energy, I did what was needed, or I drank an extra cup of espresso.
 

What was your diet and lifestyle like before you started with UP?
 

I’m an optimist; I love challenges and enjoy the beautiful moments that come my way, and of course, that comes with a beer or a snack! 

In addition, I tried to eat fruit and vegetables, I ate a lot of bread and started the day nicely with yoghurt and muesli. Healthy enough, I thought.

How did your diet and lifestyle change when you started your transformation with UP?
 

My awareness arose when we started weighing and measuring at UP. At the first weigh-in, I weighed 87kg with a body fat percentage of 30.

Together with trainers Michael and Sander, an action plan was set for the coming 12 weeks.

This meant no more carbohydrates, and eating extra vegetables in combination with meat. 

I went from 1.5 litres of water to about 2.5 litres of water a day; I started training three times a week at UP and, of course, there were a good number of steps per day. 

The first few weeks I avoided my espresso and the first two and a half months I didn’t drink any alcohol. No more Snickers ice cream and more healthy habits were learned.
 

What effect did this have on your health, performance, lifestyle, and energy levels?

The first weeks were heavy, and there were certainly moments that I felt like giving up. 

After a period of three to four weeks, I got more energy back. You become physically and mentally stronger in this 12 weeks because your focus is pointed towards your ultimate goal. 

Sander coached me well and challenged me more each session.  It was also remarkable how much knowledge he has of the human body – from diet to faeces; from the right posture in sports to squatting. 

Furthermore, it was always the comment that if I could talk, I did not train hard enough.

How did you find the training and did it fit around your busy lifestyle?
 

In order to achieve my goal, I was aware that I needed a personal trainer. 

A number of things were important to me – the trainer should have: 

  • Experience and knowledge
  • 'Practice what you preach'
  • Proven training and results
  • Ability to guide and challenge me, (which is not always easy, if I have to believe my girlfriend) 
  • A program that delivers results within a certain period

After seeing several sites and training sessions, I came across a friend Waldemar who had trained at UP. Then I knew, I wanted this too!

 

How has doing this transformation changed you and do you think it will benefit you going forward?
 

One of my goals was to get my body into shape. For me, this is the base for realizing other objectives both private and work-related. 

I feel privileged to now have a healthy body and feel responsible for treating it with attention and respect. 

I’m fitter, mentally I am stronger, and I take on new challenges with pleasure. 

In terms of lifestyle, I have learned new habits and I keep my body fit by joining the group classes at UP three times a week.
