Mira Lost 13kg at U.P. & Overcame Her Thyroid Problem
by UP Fitness, October 2, 2017
Mira wanted to lose weight and gain control back over her health.
The London finance consultant was struggling with hypothyroidism, which can cause uncontrollable weight gain and fatigue.
Mira says her thyroid problem caused her to gain 16kg, gave her rampant sugar cravings and left her feeling tired, low on energy and struggling to hold her yoga poses.
But the 44-year-old was determined not to be put on hormone balancing drugs for the rest of her life, and came to Ultimate Performance to tackle her medical problem and transform her health and her body.
Now Mira looks and feels incredible and credits her weight training and nutrition plan at UP with helping her finally lose the weight and overcome her thyroid problem.
“First and foremost – I don’t have hypothyroidism anymore! Second – I have never been this fit all my life!
“I can stand or walk for hours, I am more agile and I can participate in strenuous physical activities during my holidays.
“And of course, I now fit comfortably in my size 8 clothes!”
Weight training has transformed her health and the long-term vegetarian has been able to optimise her plant-based diet to increase her protein intake and healthy fats to improve her body composition.
Here Mira explains why her transformation journey with UP was so life-changing…
What were your expectations going into the programme and what were your motivations?
The initial trigger was weight loss. I had put on close to 16kg, the heaviest I had been in my adult life.
I was always into some kind of fitness routine for most of my adult life and managed to lose weight easily.
However, things stopped working as I was struggling with hypothyroidism, which reduced my metabolism and increased my craving for sugar – not a great combination for weight loss!
I didn’t want to be on hormone balance medication for the rest of my life, so decided to give fitness a try. I had to try something new, shock my body a bit, so decided to do weight training. So my expectations from the programme was to lose weight and get my health back.
Can you tell me how you were feeling both physically and mentally before starting with UP?
Physically, terrible – I was tired all the time, I struggled to hold on to yoga poses that I could do easily in the past and was constantly looking for some place to sit down. And of course, I was no longer a Size 8!
Mentally – surprisingly, I was positive. It was probably because I knew what caused this. However, trying to find the right solution was frustrating because nothing seemed to work!
What was your diet and lifestyle like before you started your transformation with UP?
I tried my best to eat healthily. As a vegetarian, my meals included lots of veggies, lentils, rice, quinoa, yoghurt when I cooked my own meals.
But my job involves a lot of travel – I’d end up eating mainly pasta and pizzas which ruined everything.
My cravings for sugar were very high during this period especially mid-afternoon when I’d dive for that cookie, brownie or chocolate. During this period, I continued doing yoga, Pilates and joined a local gym.
How did your diet and lifestyle change when you started your transformation with UP?
Portion control was the single biggest difference – I was asked to measure everything that I ate or drank. It was not a process I enjoyed…but it was a huge revelation.
I didn’t realise I was eating close to 2,500 calories every day (even if it meant healthy food).
Measuring my food also helped me keep track of the sugar content in my diet. Overall, it helped me in striking a balance between nutrition and portion control, while still enjoying my food.
I moved away from a high carb diet to include more protein and healthy fat in my diet. My trainer, Emily, got me into the habit of measuring my steps – I hit a minimum of 15,000 steps, even today.
What effect did this have on your health, performance, lifestyle and energy inside and outside the gym?
I felt the change within a month. I was not just losing weight – I slept well, felt calmer, was able to do my yoga poses better.
How did you find the training and did it fit around your busy lifestyle?
I loved the training from Day 1, when I met Emily. She was patient and owned my goals along with me. She pushed me to my limits and I often joked with her that she had no sympathy!
I couldn’t have been on this journey without her. I had to make some sacrifices – less going out, eating salads while the rest of the world was gorging on things that I wanted to eat, making time to cook my meals after a busy day at work etc. But this was necessary and I have no regrets.
What were the most important things you learned during your journey and what really worked for you in helping you make your transformation?
Discipline – never take what you eat or your daily exercise routine for granted. You cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet.
How has doing this transformation changed you and do you think it will benefit you going forward?
It has been five or six months since I finished at UP. I’m happy to say, I have maintained my weight and my health.
Everything I learnt at UP is now part of my lifestyle – Watching my food and portion control all comes naturally to me!
It was a great journey and a huge learning experience.
