Why we need loyalty in life, business, and in the gym
Loyalty is one of those things that's easy to talk about but rarely put into practice when the chips are down.
There's nothing wrong with looking out for your own self-interests, and there are times when you're going to have to change tack, and it might hurt someone. That might be in a relationship, a job (that's also a form of a relationship, a fact that too many employers and employees alike, miss), or even the gym that you attend.
The person who has your back can see that things change and sticks by your decision – the fair-weather person never will. Loyalty is about sticking with someone even when they fuck up. It's not about being a doormat; it's about having the respect and honesty to discuss your problems, not store them away and let bitterness set in.
Loyalty is not about having your head turned every time someone or something new and shiny comes your way. Loyalty is about being long term.
Our best relationships are all built around loyalty.
Knowing there's someone you could leave all your money with and they wouldn't take it from you – that's loyalty. Knowing that YOU are someone like that, gives you pride and self-respect that no one can ever take away from you, and is worth more than any amount of money.
Understanding and appreciating loyalty isn't some tree-hugging hippy idea for liberals; it's a pragmatic, business-friendly fact – I'd like to think one of the reasons that UP has had its own modest level of success is because I understand loyalty and do my level best to both earn and appreciate it.
The biggest losers I know by far in the fitness industry are those bitter, narcissistic, ungrateful snakes who wouldn't know loyalty if it came up and bit them on the ass.
Loyalty is one of those funny things that the more you put into it, the more it gives you back.
