What were your expectations going into the programme and what were your motivations? 
 

I would consider myself a regular gym-goer for the past five years both by myself and with a trainer. However, like most average gym-goers, I found that while I would find exercise satisfying and a great stress reliever accompanied by some great initial gains, I didn’t feel like I was getting closer to what I was after.

The turning point was a few months ago after returning from a one year stint working in New York. 

Months of indulging in ribs, fried chicken and excessive drinking had taken its toll and I had become even further from my goal than ever before.

After being inspired by the post-transformation photos a friend of mine had put up on Facebook after 12 weeks with UP Singapore, I knew that I had found something that would get me back on track and help me achieve something I had never achieved before.

Can you tell me how you were feeling both physically and mentally before starting with UP? 
 

The project-based nature of my work meant that I would alternate between being not very busy for a few weeks, to finding myself spending long hours in front of the desk for months on end.

As a result, I would yo-yo between fully committed to health and lifestyle, before completely abandoning it all when busy. 

During these busy, stressful periods it was easy to use this as an excuse to not exercise consistently or make good food choices, and I would frequently found myself lethargic and in a poor mood, with little motivation to exercise or at times even go outside and socialise when I got the chance.
 

What was your diet and lifestyle like before you started your transformation with UP? 
 

Like many people who considered themselves somewhat into fitness, I had fallen under the illusion that I was a healthy eater and made good food choices. But having started with UP you quickly come to the realisation that healthy eating isn’t about eating salads from Monday to Thursday and letting yourself have a complete blow-out come Friday and the weekend.
 

How did your diet and lifestyle change when you started your transformation with UP? 
 

There could not be a more significant turn-around in my diet and lifestyle after starting with UP. The most significant thing that UP gives you is self-awareness and accountability.

When I started with UP, my trainer, David, after evaluating my current fitness and goals, clearly defined my calorie and macro intake, as well as what foods I could eat. 

Given my susceptibility in the past to fall off a diet in a couple of weeks, he would have me enter everything I ate into MyFitnessPal and monitored it to ensure I stuck to the plan.

The world of fitness and nutrition is a minefield of conflicting views and information on what and when you should and shouldn’t eat. 

David made me realise that the easiest way to help you stick to a plan was to keep things simple, and make minor adjustments to improve things where required.

What effect did this have on your health, performance, lifestyle and energy inside and outside the gym?
 

Initially, I found it quite tough to adjust my lifestyle to accommodate my diet and workout regime. Particularly with my busy job I thought there was no way I could find time to go shopping and meal prep.

However one of the things you soon realise is that if you want something bad enough, you will make time and find a way to make it happen. 

In this case, I found a few hours on a Sunday night to cook a few meals in bulk (and I quickly found out that I liked cooking!), meaning I didn’t have to think about what I was going to eat for the rest of the week.

Soon I found myself completely hooked on everything diet and exercise. There is nothing more addictive than seeing tangible results to motivate you to keep going, because you know that every day, with every decision you make, you are getting closer to your goal.
 

How did you find the training and did it fit around your busy lifestyle? 
 

Compared to the diet, the training was the easy part. UP might only be three sessions a week, but David made sure every minute of every session was completely well spent.
 

What were your results like after your transformation? 
 

I have achieved more with UP in three months than I have in the past few years working out either by myself or another personal trainer. Moreover, this experience has motivated me to keep it up and integrate it as a permanent part of my life from here on in.



 

What were the most important things you learned during your journey and what really worked for you in helping you make your transformation? 
 

UP has always claimed to bring about a different breed of personal trainers, compared to what you would find at your local gym and this couldn’t be more true.

I found my trainer incredibly knowledgeable and very willing to explain the exercises, form and workouts he had designed for me. 

In the past, I had never consciously considered fitness to be a complete package of training, rest and nutrition, meaning that while my previous attempts at achieving my fitness goals may to some degree produce results, it certainly was not efficient.

What I have learnt at UP, particularly with the nutrition knowledge I had gained has put me in good stead to continue pursuing my fitness goals in the most time effective way possible.


 

How has doing this transformation changed you and do you think it will benefit you going forward? 
 

The tangible, physical benefits of UP speak for themselves both for me and any other client. On top of that, however, what achieving this transformation gives you is a belief that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Which applies not just to your training goals but to everything else you want to achieve in life too.

Having trained with other personal trainers before, I would not hesitate to recommend UP to those who are committed to seeing a change in themselves.

It certainly is not easy and takes a lot of dedication, however, the UP difference really lies in the dedication that their trainers have in making a change in their clients.
